I don't think you'd really have to be 'into' hiphop to appreciate both the inspiring lyrics and the out-of-this-world, coolness-oozing piano riff that carries the track by this awesome pianist. Let me take you by the hand here and introduce you to the amazing Robert Glasper.
If you are in fact into soulful, jazzy and yes -the occasional hiphoppy (hiphop sure tends to be jazzy a lot! Or is that just the hiphop I like...) piano playing, I HIGHLY recommend checking this dude out. Apart from writing and playing his own music he also tends to cover from Nirvana to Stevie Wonder classics with his totally own feel and taste. Just Google, or Youtube 'Robert Glasper Stevie Wonder' or '... Nirvana' to see what I mean. That is how an advanced -and when I say advanced I mean: ADVANCED- Pop-Pianist sounds (that, obviously, holds the fair amount of jazz and soul in his own taste and is not affraid to extensively throw those in to flavor up his piano spice).
Wherever you are skill-wise and whichever stylistic way you intend to go is of course totally up to you, but I'm positive that again any- and everybody can learn a TON from this tutorial -even if it might not be your exact style of choice.
Might be quite a bit too advanced for most of you to actually play the thing flawlessly, but just looking at the whole thing, sucking it all in and puzzling around with what you see, let it inspire you in your style and playing, will no doubt fuel your theoretical knowledge.
Not really stuff for the total beginner this week I'm afraid, but hey, let's give those advanced players something to bite into every once in a while too, ait?
Have fun!
Cheers, Coen.
