Formidable - Stromae

The title of this song describes my current situation and that of Piano Couture as a whole quite well, actually.

As I hope it does yours, by the way :).

Over here, @piano_couture the 2 MILLIONTH youtube hit has been reached this last weekend (two million, can you believe that?? and how fast the second followed after the first mil, just last November?)! I'm truly thankful for all the support and awesome messages from all over the world. We're closing in on the next goal too: 15000 subscribers :).
That just in itself is 'nuff reason to celebrate 'till the brake of dawn already, of course.
Adding the fact that the whole website is currently being renewed, rebuilt, restyled, revamped with a LOT of spicy new flavors added to the Piano-experience that is to be enjoyed over here; very serious plans to start giving the gift of music to the lesser fortunate children in Asia taking very serious form; me being head-over-heels in love and there you have it: 'Formidable' indeed.

More news and updates soon to follow.

'Formidable' is a song that revolves around a haunting high piano-riff that is - as is in signature for hip-hop music styles - looped and looped again.

The nice chord changes that form the sweet progression to this interesting musical piece of poetry, turned out to be a nice exercise for left hand chord voicing, while playing 'melody- / riff-style' with the right. At the end (bridge) there's a very interesting technique going on with both hands playing in the same region. Creative stuff with the hands going on there.

I also have a challenge this week, which is both exactly that, as it is a good exercise for your improving your theoretical / harmonic knowledge.

Challenge for this week:

As the harmony (chords) underneath the right-hand riff melody continuously change, also the relationship to the root change. For instance, on the first chord (Em) the melody a, f#, g, e, can be explained as playing the 4, 2, 3, 1 of the chord Em. On D/F# it's 5, 3, 4, 2.

Do you know what the relationship of the melodic notes to the root are on all other chords?

Leave a comment and see if you can write it down like this:

Em: 4, 2, 3, 1.
D/F#: 5, 3, 4, 2.
G: ...
C: ...
etc.

Enjoy! And don't forget to leave a comment (questions or other remarks are more than welcome as well!) :).

Cheers, Coen.
