See You Again – Wiz Khalifa ft. Charlie Puth

Probably one of my most in-depth, versatile tutorials to date. Obviously I felt the need to put in some extra effort here, since this mega-hit -originally written on a piano by a professional Pop-Pianist (Charlie Puth)- features such an impressive set of Pop-Piano skills and techniques that watching this lesson alone could give you a complete introduction on what is possible when tackling the piano like we do here @ Piano Couture. An exemplification of Pop-Piano at its finest, used to both compose and play a tune that is on its way to breaking records in pop-music land.

Now the intro to this tune is really the tricky part here. It’s built mostly out of the same chords that carry the rest of the tune too, but played and voiced in a way -using a combination of patterns and different voicing techniques to form a really nice signature piano part- that could be quite challenging for some of you. However, when you know your chords & patterns, you should be fine and / or have the option to simplify yourself (as I also show a couple of options for in the vid).

Since, as mentioned, the song was originally written on piano, and there is a ‘demo’ version out there on the Youtubez that is in fact this solo-piano version by Charlie Puth (singer / composer), which exerts so many different Pop-Piano skills, for the rest of the tutorial I decided to make sort of a ‘mix’ between the (much easier) Wiz Khalifa version (just make sure you ace the intro, chorus and verse and basically repeat that verse over all parts that are not intro or chorus.. oh no wait, there’s a bridge too 🙂 ) and his version that thereby also demonstrates how to use Pop-Piano skills to ‘dress up’ and make sort of a more interesting piano part out of some more ‘basic’ chords.

So there you have yet another great example and in essence the reason for why I choose to handle this approach on this website: super quickly play an easy basic structure of the song, which is than extended and built up to a bit more interesting and ‘pianistic’ version (which is was originally taken / stripped down from, to get to Wiz Khalifa’s version!) using more advanced Pop-Piano techniques. Awesome stuff here.

Have fun and let me know what you think!

Cheers, Coen.

*UPDATE. Guys I’m sorry but I appear to have had my head up my ass for the ‘break down chorus part’ (that part that’s played higher up on the piano) since what I show you in the tutorial is from Charlie’s version, without mentioning that. For the Wiz Khalifa version the chords should actually even be a little higher up the board, so I just quickly made a new sheet for that one, with correct voicings. That’s played 4 times, where the last 2 times the basses are played an octave lower. For those last two rounds, simply play the same thing for the right hand, but indeed lower your left hand notes one octave (new sheet for that part is below the vid).
